Using routine to energise
So much of what we do in the day is routine. From the moment we open our eyes in the morning to the time we drop off to sleep at night, much of what we do is a repeat of yesterday, last week, last year.
Tapping into these daily repeats can be as comforting as watching the rerun of a favourite movie. When the day becomes stressful it can be nice to just fall back into the open arms of a routine that asks nothing from us, yet soothes our senses and also improves our life.
Bill Gates washes dishes by hand every evening. I sweep my house every morning. Both activities have benefits in improving health and wellbeing. Both are easy and straight forward to do. Both repeat the same action over and over again.
What activities relax and reward you? Which can you bring to your work day to settle, soothe, and improve the moment and so ease confusion, stress and dismay?
These daily routines can have big power once we complete them with mindful awareness. So pay attention to each step, each stroke, each arm and leg lift as you go.
