Heroes
There is a thing about good news that makes our hearts sing. Yesterday I read a gorgeous post about a chap who is battling Crohn’s disease: an heroic journey that ends with some tangible success. As wonderful as it was my joy was mixed with sadness. Not by his writing, I truly think his story is joyous, but by the underlying story: Courage produces success.
Is that always true? What about the stories of the people who keep going despite it all? Who continue to live with poor health, addictions, fears, and the other troubles from we each suffer at times.
… Your team mate who day by day deals with the demons you can’t see, doing the best he can whilst knowing his manner discomforts you. The homeless person who could easily depart this earth but who fights for one more day. The addict who tries to free herself from her addiction, only to lose time and time again… To me, these are the true heroes in this world.
It may look nothing like courage to others, but to me that is exactly what it is.
Somehow they keep doing battle with their fears, disappointments and pain knowing their only reward may be a tomorrow that’s the same.
These are the people who lift me highest. The ones who keep going even when success stays out of reach.
