Taking back control.
Stop the rush. You’ve finished that big task and its now onto the next. I would suggest that right now you would like to feel pleasure – for what you have achieved in terms of outputs and for the hurdles you have overcome in doing so – do you? Or are you focused on the huge amount still to do? Chaffing (or groaning) as you start on the next item on your list of ToDos?
It is now time to pause and take stock of what has happened over the time you’ve been invested in this activity. Reflection hastens skills growth and goals, gives perspective, and enables us to feel more pleasure and control in our lives.
- Reflect on the distance covered and its impact on your career and life goals.
- List what you did well, not so well, and badly and note why you have labelled them such. The Whys will show the assessment criteria you’ve used. This could be a useful insight in itself.
- Now replan the activity with your current insight. It will only take moments.
- Put this in a folder for access when you next have a task of this type.
Turn now to your relationships, your mind state, and your body.
- Reflect as you have done above.
- Does anything need repair or extra attention?
- Does anything else need to be reviewed?
Now that you’ve finished pat yourself on your back. You know what to do next.
